Emmanuel Macron has invited "all stakeholders in the territory" to a "summit dedicated to New Caledonia" under his presidency, starting July 2 and for "the time necessary" in the face of the current impasse, according to a letter obtained by AFP . "Beyond institutional issues, which are major, I hope that our discussions can also focus on economic and societal issues," the President of the Republic wrote in this letter dated Tuesday, June 24, and notably broadcast on X by the Renaissance New Caledonian MP, Nicolas Metzdorf.

New Caledonia was rocked from mid-May 2024 by riots that left 14 dead and billions of euros in damage, against a backdrop of acute institutional, economic, and social crisis. According to the Head of State, under these conditions, "the tension was too high to allow for peaceful dialogue between all components of Caledonian society" and to examine the situation created by the three referendums that successively confirmed the country's continued membership of the French Republic.

Since the last self-determination referendum in 2021 , boycotted by the separatists, the political situation in the archipelago has been frozen. Manuel Valls led negotiations in New Caledonia between separatists and non-separatists in early May, but in vain. " The Minister of State managed to rekindle the threads of dialogue, which is an achievement in itself," but this "did not lead to an agreement on the institutional future of the territory," Emmanuel Macron recalled in his invitation letter.

After this failure, the president announced that he would invite the stakeholders to Paris "from mid-June." This summit will therefore take place "from July 2" and "our discussions will last as long as necessary to ensure that the difficult issues we will have to address can be addressed with all the seriousness they deserve," he said in his letter.
